VLC media player is one of the most popular among Windows and Mac users. The VLC media player would hardly be incapable of playing any of your media files. Even if you come across a media file format that VLC cannot play, you can surely find a codec for the same.

However, VLC being the most popular media player has one strange error throwing every now and then. The error “No suitable decoder module: VLC does not support the audio or video format undf” is one of those common VLC media player error reported by the community on the forum.

This error occurs when you try to play a newly downloaded or moved file to your PC using the VLC media player. What’s strange is that there is no one-touch fix for this error. The same error may occur at different times to different users because of different reasons. So, you may have to try all the available fixes on your PC to fix the “No suitable decoder module: VLC does not support the audio or video format undf” error.

Wha is UNDF File Format in VLC?

UNDF isn’t a file format, but a short error code to explain that the file you are trying to play has an undefined file format.

Basically, it means the VLC media player is not able to read the format of the file you are trying to play. When the VLC media is unable to recognize the file format, it would certainly throw an error such as “No suitable decoder module: VLC does not support the audio or video format undf”.

What causes VLC Does Not Support UNDF Format Error?

As I said earlier, there is no direct answer to the question what causes the UNDF format error in the VLC player. However, one of the most common cause of this error is a corrupted media file or incomplete media file. So the first thing you should be doing is checking whether you have the working media file with you.

The second reason for the UNDF error in VLC media player could be the lack of appropriate codec support to play the concerned file. In such cases, you would end up seeing “No suitable decoder module: VLC does not support the audio or video format undf” error in your PC.

The below give fixes can also fix VLC Media Player errors like “How to fix VLC does not support the audio or video format “undf” and How to fix VLC does not support undf .mkv .flv .mov extensions.

Fix 1: Check the File for Error to Fix UNDF Error in VLC

As I said earlier, the first thing you should be doing is make sure that the media file you are willing to play is error free. That is, making sure that the file is in working condition and is not corrupted. If you have downloaded the file from the internet, make sure that you have downloaded the complete file before trying to play it using the VLC player.

As, playing an incomplete or corrupted media file VLC media player would through VLC does not support UNDF Format error.

Fix 2: Update your VLC Media Player

The next step is to try to see if any latest update is available for the VLC media player. At times, new updates for the software brings bug fixes and new support formats.

So, head over to update section in VLC Media Player, and check for any pending updates. If any updates are available, make sure you download and install it.

Fix 3: Install Combined Community Codec Pack

Now this is something I would recommend you to do, even if you were able to fix the issue with the above steps. The error VLC does not support UNDF Format can occur due to the lack of video and audio codec in VLC player.

If your media file requires a format which is not supported by the VLC media player, you will see this error.

Now to fix it, what you can do is install the required codecs. Since there is no way to find out which codec support missing, what we will do is install Combined Community Codec Pack, which comes with the complete list of all the essential audio and video codecs required to play almost every media file format.

Begin with downloading the combined Community Codec Pack from here. Run the software and before the installation, select all the video and audio format shown in the screen shot below.

The Combined Community Codec pack comes with the support for CoreWavPack, FFDShow Tryout, FLV Splitter, Haali Media Splitter, MPEG-2 Decoder and VSFilter formates.
