How to Record Gameplay, Desktop Apps Screen using Game DVR in Windows 10: Windows 10 is out and the tech world is exploring the new feature in Windows 10 OS.

The latest version of Microsoft OS bring several new features to the OS, but features which would make gamers day would be the Game DVR Tool and Xbox to PC streaming feature.

It is essentially a recording tool, which allows you to record your Gameplay in Windows 10. However, there are other uses of this tool, including the ability to record your desktop screen. Let’s have a look at “Game DVR” and how you can use it to record your Windows 10 desktop apps.

To make things clear, the Game DVR is not a standalone tool, but it comes with Xbox App in Windows 10. Apart from allowing you to record Gameplay, it also allows you to record screen when you are streaming from Xbox One to PC.

The streaming feature comes in handy when access to television is busy and you want to play your favourite game anyhow. By using this, you can stream any game from Xbox One to your Windows 10 PC.

Coming back to the topic, the Game DVR tool allows you to record Gameplay in PC, but doesn’t allow you to record your Desktop screen or Apps.

Fortunately, with the help of a workaround you can record Desktop Apps screen using Game DVR. Here we will have a look at how to make this work using Game DVR hotkey or shortcut keys.

Record Gameplay Videos using Game DVR in Windows 10

Follow these steps to start recording Gameplay videos in Windows 10 using Game DVR.

Step 1: Launch Xbox APP and Game DVR

Begin with launching or opening the Xbox App in Windows 10 PC. Next, go to Game DVR from Menu (look in the left). Next, press WIN G key on your keyboard to launch Game DVR.

    Step 2: Start Recording

Now that you are in the Game DVR window, you can start recording the Gameplay by pressing WIN ALT R key when you are ready to record. Note that apart from recording, you can also use this tool to take screenshots. Once you are done with recording, click on Stop button to save the recording.

Record Desktop Apps using Game DVR in Windows 10

By default, the Game DVR doesn’t have any feature to capture or record the desktop apps which are not downloaded from the Windows store. So, here is how you can make it record other non-Store Windows 10 Apps with a simple workaround.

Start or open the app (non-windows store app) you want to record. Next, open Xbox App and launch the Game DVR recording tool using the WIN G key.

Next, switch back to the app you want to record and open it in full screen. When you are ready to record, press WIN ALT R key to start the recording. The Game DVR recording tool will hide itself by shrinking to the top left corner.

Once you are done with recording the App, open Game DVR recording tool again and click on Stop recording. All your recorded videos will be saved in MP4 format, which you can play on your PC straight away. You can find your entire recorded videos list in the Game DVR menu. You can remove the unnecessary frames from your video using the video trimming feature available in the tool.

This tool may not be a great video editing or screen capturing tool, but it would come in handy in case you don’t have access to any other screen recording software in your PC or if you just want to share a short video which doesn’t require much of recording.
