Something happened, something happened, this is the most annoying and most discussed error on the internet today. Microsoft released Windows 10 as a free upgrade for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 genuine users on Wednesday. However, the upgrading process wasn’t as smooth as Microsoft would have expected. While most of the Windows users upgraded to Windows 10 without any hiccups, few ended up with “Something happened” error while upgrading their PC to Windows 10. To make things worse, this error doesn’t even provide anything more than an explanation which says “something happened”. While looking for the fix for this error, I came across few suggestions and fixes, which helped in resolving this error. Here we will have a look at the available fixes and suggestions to fix this error.

As I said earlier, the “Something Happened” error occurs when you try to upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 using the Media Creation tool. The error message or explanation doesn’t make any sense or it is as good as useless. So, in today’s round we will look at the available fixes for this annoying error which has worked for many users.

    What causes Something Happened Error?

Now Microsoft has not provided any official statement over the cause of this error. However, the error could occur because of an incorrect region and language settings, incomplete Windows updates or not having the authority to run Media Creation tool or problem with your SQL servers. Most of these problems could be fixed easily except if you have an issue with SQL Server. Follow these steps and see if you can get rid of this error.

Step 1: Run Media Creation Tool with Administrative Privilege

Something happened error can occur if you were trying to run the Media creation tool without having administrative rights. Right-click on Media Creation Tool.exe file and from the context menu select “Run as Administrator”.

Did it solve the error? If not, proceed with step 2.

Step 2: Download and Install All the Available Updates for your Windows PC

Not having the up to date Windows on your PC can also trigger “Something happened” error. To fix this, go to Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Updates and install all the updates. Repeat this step until you see no updates available message.

Step 3: Trouble Shoot Installing Updates

To do this go to Control Panel>System and Security>Windows Update>View Update History.
Next, click on “troubleshoot problem with installing updates” and follow the onscreen instructions.

Next, restart Media creation tool and see if it fixes the error.

Step 4: Change Region and Language

Some users have reported that changing the region or the Language to US has fixed the error for them. Follow the steps as mentioned below.

Begin with opening Control Panel, and click on Region (icon). Or if you know to use RUN, then type in intl.cpl and hit enter to directly open the settings.

Next, click on Administrative and select Change System Locale. It will open a Region Settings window, in the Current System locale, select English (United States) from the drop down menu.
Click on OK to save the modified settings.

Next, click on “Copy Settings” and check the boxes, which says “Welcome screen and system accounts” and “New user accounts”.
Once again, click on OK button to save the settings.
Before you retry to run the Media Creation tool again, restart your PC. Once it restarted, try to run the Media Creation Tool and see if the “Something Happened” error has gone away. In most of the cases, changing locale and language settings have fixed this error for many people.

Step 5: Run Media Creation Tool as Different User

If you are getting “Something happened” error on administrator account, then switching to a different user account could fix this error. To do this, log out from Administrator account, login as a different user (if you have another user account) and try to run the Media creation tool. This time it should work without any problem.

Step 6: Turn Off / On WiFi

If you are trying to upgrade to Windows 10 on a WiFi network, then do the following.
Turn off WiFi network and run the Media Creation Tool. Now you should get “something happened” error. When you see this error simply turn on WiFi and see if the media creation tools work.

So, this was about how to fix “something happened” error while upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. If you have any alternative fix for this error then post it in the comment section and let us know.
